THE PROPOSAL - Movie Review

The basic premise of the movie is hackneyed. Two people pretending to be lovers for a plausible reason fall in love when thrown together repeatedly because of the pretence. But at the end of the movie, the plot is still alive and kicking thanks to a majour rescue operation carried out by the script and the acting.

The scenes, dialogues and perfomances are actually good enough to carry the story through. Margaret Tate is the Hitler boss at a book-publishing firm and Andrew Pxton is her harrowed secretary. When a forgotten expired visa leads to the possibility of her being deported to Canada, Margaret bullies Andrew into agreeing to marry her. But then she has to fly to Alaska to meet his family. The 'twists and turns' are predictable - Andrew's family turns out to be a kooky bunch, he reveals a moneyed background thereby doing away with the social and economic devide, they see each other naked, she reveals a soul beneath the crusty exterior and he chases after her to make sure the stays. Bullock is as flowless as never for a romantic comedy.
Of the minor charactors, grandma and multi-tasking Spanish immigrant are well etched. Director Anne Fletcher is not as consistently good as Bullock, though. Those long-drawn out scenes dealing with the importance of family may make you yawn, but Bullock quickly reins it all in and delivers more laughs. Catch this flick before it does the disappearing act.
